Back pain when sitting: office, remote work and sofa

Sitting for a long time tends to cause lower-back discomfort. Alternating micro-breaks, mobility and lumbar support often helps. Dorsi combines support, a mobility check and mini-games, without replacing medical advice.

The right sitting posture at the office: INRS guidelines

According to INRS (the French occupational health and safety institute), the least-discomfort seated posture means adjusting the seat so that the feet rest flat on the floor, the thighs are horizontal or the hips very slightly higher than the knees, the knee angle is right or slightly obtuse (greater than 90°) with no compression behind the knees, the lower part of the backrest supports the natural curve of the back and the upper back is straight.

Again according to INRS, armrests, if any, are adjusted so that the forearms rest on them without preventing the seat from being drawn up to the desk. If the work surface is adjustable, it is set so that the shoulders are relaxed and the elbows form an angle of 90 to 135°. The top of the screen goes at eye level (lower with progressive lenses), about 50 to 70 cm (20 to 28 inches) away.

If the feet do not reach the floor after adjustment, INRS says a footrest should be provided. There is no single posture: INRS speaks of a “least-discomfort” posture, to be complemented by changes of position.

Prolonged sitting: alternate and stand up

According to INRS, it is advisable to break up sitting, for example by standing, moving around or stretching, to limit exposure to sedentary postures. INRS recommends active breaks, ideally every 30 minutes, which also let you rest your eyes from the screen.

INRS also mentions the height-adjustable desk, which lets you alternate sitting and standing. According to the French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie), all everyday movements, without forcing, are beneficial and prolonged rest may make pain persist: getting up regularly matters as much as posture itself.

Remote work and laptops

According to INRS, prolonged use of a screen built into the keyboard, as on a laptop, is unsuitable. INRS advises connecting the laptop to an external screen, keyboard and mouse. Failing that, it advises raising the computer so the top of the screen is at eye level, with a separate keyboard and mouse.

Sofa, floor, crossed legs: what the sources say

The sources we read for this page (INRS, the French national health insurance Assurance Maladie, and the French national health authority HAS) set guidelines for the screen workstation. They do not name a best position for the sofa, the floor, crossed legs or sitting on your knees, and we do not invent one.

What can be taken from their texts: alternate positions, avoid staying still for long and get up regularly. For leisure sitting, comfort and changing position matter more than a perfect posture. If pain persists, if you have leg pain or a warning sign, see a professional. See also our page on pain in the lower back.

Office and remote work ergonomics

Feet flat, knees slightly lower than hips, screen at eye level, forearms parallel to the floor.

A lumbar cushion supports the natural curve; Dorsi adds a sensor and mini-games between video calls.

Active break routine

2 minutes standing every hour: gentle extension, walking, breathing. Aria can suggest time slots based on your Chutex calendar.

Sitting context (different from the low back pain guide)

This page is about pain linked to sitting (office, remote work, sofa), as distinct from the general low back pain guide; it is the one page on this topic.

Warning signs: get help quickly

Call 911 (in France, 15 or 112), or seek urgent care, especially if you have: pain after a severe injury; fever alongside the pain; progressive weakness or numbness in a leg; new bladder or bowel problems; intense night pain that does not ease; a history of cancer with recent pain; unexplained weight loss.

These examples draw on general public prevention messages (Ameli, the French national health insurance, and emergency services). They do not replace medical advice. Outside an emergency: pain that lasts, sciatica or any uncertainty → doctor or physical therapist.

Dorsi: what the tool does and does not do

Dorsi supports consistency: lumbar support, lower back mobility check (indicative), guided programs (short sessions), mini-games, indicative exportable summaries.

Dorsi does not treat low back pain, does not make diagnoses, is not a medical device, and does not replace a doctor or physical therapist when clinical care is indicated.

Sedentary office and remote work

Back pain when sitting combines sedentary time, ergonomics and too few breaks. See the general low back pain guide for the wider picture.

When to see someone / warning signs

General information (messages in the style of Ameli, the French national health insurance, and emergency services): severe injury, fever, progressive neurological deficit, new bladder or bowel control problems, night pain that does not ease, a history of cancer with recent pain, unexplained weight loss → emergency care or prompt medical advice (911 if needed; in France, 15 or 112).

Outside an emergency: pain that lasts, pain that spreads, frequent recurrences or any uncertainty → doctor or physical therapist. This site does not make diagnoses.

Where Dorsi can help, without being the answer to everything

Dorsi can support a routine: sitting posture, short guided exercises, gamification to help you stick with it, indicative summaries you can export.

It is not suited as an “automatic solution” for every case of low back pain. Severe pain, warning signs or a need for care: doctor / physical therapist; human support is possible through Chutex Physio.

The Chutex ecosystem: back, recovery, body composition, strengthening

Dorsi anchors your lower back routine at the desk and in the car. The Elio band adds sleep, heart rate variability (HRV) and stress at the wrist, so you can compare tiredness with posture.

The Vita scale adds estimated body composition and nutrition. Model I strengthens the back with the guided pulley.

The Chutex pack includes Aria AI. Hosting of health data with a provider certified under HDS (the French health-data hosting certification) is reserved for eligible accounts in France and is not a promise outside France.

Chutex Care: personal emergency response service (SOS/GPS) for the Elder vest, France only. Separate from the Dorsi Health cushion.

What Dorsi does, and what it does not do

Dorsi does

  • Measure how far you tilt as you move while seated on the cushion (pelvic tilts, side tilts, circles).
  • Build a guided lower back mobility check in the Chutex app (indicative).
  • Offer mini-games controlled by moving on the cushion, for regular activity.
  • Let you share or export indicative summaries with a loved one or a professional.
  • Work with the rest of the Chutex ecosystem (same app), depending on your other products.

Dorsi does not

  • Cure or treat low back pain, sciatica or any condition, or make it go away.
  • Make a medical diagnosis or replace a physical therapist or doctor.
  • Promise instant relief or replace a painkiller.
  • Guarantee clinical results.
  • Work as a medical device.

Connected wellness product (comfort and posture). Persistent pain, sciatica, injury, pregnancy or a medical condition: consult a professional. Emergencies: 911 (in France, 15 or 112).

FAQ

Is back pain at the office low back pain?

People often speak of lower-back pain linked to sitting; the medical term and the diagnosis belong to the health professional.

What is the right sitting posture at a desk?

According to INRS (the French occupational health and safety institute): feet flat on the floor, thighs horizontal or hips very slightly higher than the knees, the lower part of the backrest supporting the natural curve of the back, upper back straight, shoulders relaxed and the screen at eye level. INRS describes a least-discomfort posture, to be alternated with other positions.

How long can you sit without a break?

INRS (the French occupational health and safety institute) recommends active breaks, ideally every 30 minutes: stand up, walk, stretch, and look away from the screen.

Can you sit with your legs crossed?

The sources we read take no position on this posture. For an office chair, INRS (the French occupational health and safety institute) asks for the feet to rest flat on the floor. Change position regularly and see a professional if pain persists.

What is the right way to sit on a sofa?

The sources we read do not define an ideal sofa posture. Alternate positions, get up regularly and avoid staying still for long, as INRS (the French occupational health and safety institute) and the French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie) recommend.

Is a seated-posture cushion useful?

It can help you settle in, but it replaces neither seat adjustment nor movement. See our guide to the ergonomic cushion and the comparison of classic and connected cushions.
