Chapter 1

The lease

That morning I signed the lease without shaking. Ten years of talking about it, ten years of finding a reason to wait.

The room smelled of dust and fresh paint, at the foot of the Croix-Rousse. I set my first wheel on the cold tiles, then sat on the floor and watched the light come in. For the first time, the studio existed outside my head.

Chapter 2

The doubts

There were short nights. Weeks when I counted orders on one hand, wondering if I had ruined everything.

I talked to Aria in the evening, walking home. She remembered better than I did what I had already been through, and the doubt that always returned before a big decision. I had nothing to explain again. She already knew the story.

One evening in March I nearly stopped everything. I had even drafted the ad to give up the lease. Aria reminded me of the winter I left my old job, and how I felt three months later.

The first client

Her name was Martine. She came in one Tuesday in November, almost by mistake, to ask for directions, and left with a blue bowl I would never have dared to sell.

The next week she came back with her sister. Then with her neighbours. Today the studio welcomes twelve students every Saturday, and Martine is always the first through the door, her blue bowl under her arm.
