Elder airbag vest

Elder is a wearable airbag vest for older adults. When its sensors detect a fall, the airbag inflates in about 0.08 s (manufacturer's figure) to cushion the head, back, pelvis and hips. It is worn over clothing and is reusable. Elder is CE category II personal protective equipment, not a medical device. It does not prevent falls and does not call emergency services.

Elder wearable airbag vest for fall protection. Use 911 in emergencies. Chutex Care is available in France only; medical teleconsultations and home-care partner interventions are currently available in France.

What Elder does, and what it does not do

Elder does

  • Detect a fall in progress and inflate an airbag.
  • Cushion the head, back, pelvis, hips and femoral neck during a fall.
  • Notify configured caregivers via the Chutex app after deployment.
  • Be reused after replacing helium cartridges (about 30 seconds).
  • Complement a broader fall-prevention strategy (home safety, activity, medical follow-up).

Elder does not

  • Does not prevent every fall or guarantee zero fracture risk.
  • Replace medical advice, physiotherapy or home adaptations.
  • Does not prevent or treat seizures, or replace a prescribed seizure helmet.
  • Act as emergency life support (call emergency services for life-threatening events).
  • Replace a telecare or alert service. Chutex Care is available in France only; medical teleconsultations and home-care partner interventions are currently available in France.

Personal protective equipment (PPE category II - CE marking). Ask a healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition.

What is a fall vest?

A fall vest is a garment worn over clothing: when its motion sensors detect a fall, an airbag inflates around the hips, back and head to cushion the impact. Unlike a fall detector, which only sends an alert, it acts on the impact itself. Elder does not prevent the fall and does not call emergency services.

The same idea is sold under several names: fall vest, airbag vest for elderly people, airbag jacket, inflatable vest for falls. What they share is wearable impact protection that activates during a fall. What differs from one product to another is the certification, the body zones covered and what happens after the fall.

Elder is personal protective equipment (PPE, category II, CE marked; EU type-examination certificate no. 1135260401/OE, notified body RICOTEST 0498). It is not a medical device, and it has not been cleared or evaluated by the FDA.

Prevention still comes first. The CDC recommends strength and balance exercise, a review of medicines with a doctor or pharmacist, a yearly eye exam and fewer tripping hazards at home to lower the chance of falling. A fall vest is meant for the fall that happens anyway.

Airbag jacket, inflatable vest for falls, air bag vest: is it the same product?

In everyday searches these names are interchangeable. An airbag jacket for elderly adults, an inflatable vest for falls and an air bag vest for elderly people (written as two words) all describe a wearable garment with an inflating airbag. What counts is what the product does, how it is certified and what it leaves out.

Elder is worn like a vest over clothing, weighs about 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) and comes in sizes S to XXL. Its airbag is designed to cushion the head, back, pelvis, hips and femoral neck once a fall is detected, and the vest is reusable after the two helium cartridges are replaced, which takes about 30 seconds.

Three questions help compare any of these products. What is covered: the hips only, or the head, back and hips? How is it certified: which PPE category and which notified body? And what does the maker not claim: preventing falls, medical use, calling for help?

Hip protectors, fall detection watches and medical alert pendants belong to other product families. The comparison table further down the page puts them side by side with the airbag vest.

Elder airbag vest: impact protection for the fall that still happens

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults aged 65 and older in the United States (CDC). Elder cushions the physical impact of a detected fall; it is more than an alert.

Elder is designed to combine body cushioning, fall detection and caregiver alerts in one wearable vest, for home fall-risk management, not medical diagnosis.

Unlike a telecare button alone, Elder is designed to cushion the neck, back, pelvis, hips and femur, the areas involved in many fall injuries, including hip fractures.

For families and caregivers, it can support aging in place: your loved one keeps daily routines while wearing protection that needs no button press.

Who should wear a fall protection vest?

Anyone at risk of falling who wants autonomy without relying only on an alert device.

Seniors over 65, fragile adults, post-operative or convalescence: worn over clothes with no daily adjustment.

People with epilepsy and sudden drop attacks: when a fall is detected and the vest is properly worn - Elder is designed to cushion impact. It does not prevent seizures, does not detect every event, replace prescribed helmets, neurological care or emergency response.

Parkinson's, balance disorders, neuropathy: Elder complements mobility aids without replacing medical follow-up.

Epilepsy fall protection with an airbag vest

Epilepsy patients are among the most exposed to sudden, unpredictable falls.

During a tonic-clonic seizure, there may be no reaction time. When a fall pattern is detected and the vest is properly worn, Elder is designed to cushion the impact. It does not prevent seizures, does not detect every event and does not replace prescribed helmets, neurological care or emergency response.

Caregivers receive notification through the Chutex app. This does not replace medical supervision or emergency services (911).

Discreet under everyday clothes. Many adults with epilepsy seek additional body protection, always with neurologist agreement; Elder does not prevent seizures or replace prescribed helmets.

How the Elder airbag vest works

Automatic detection, deployment, connected alert: no action required from the wearer.

Integrated sensors analyse motion in real time. When a fall is confirmed, helium cartridges inflate the airbag around torso and hips.

The airbag is designed to inflate in about 0.08 s once the fall is detected (manufacturer's figure). That figure describes the inflation, not the time needed to detect the fall. Cartridges are replaced in under 30 seconds for reuse.

36 h battery, 6 h USB charge. Weight 2.6 lb (1.2 kg). Sizes S to XXL over clothing.

Aging in place with fall prevention

Elder helps avoid institutional care when fear of falling limits independence.

Getting up, walking, cooking: movement becomes safer with continuous automatic protection.

Families regain serenity without constant monitoring. Alerts via email - SMS or app.

In France - Elder can be paired with Chutex Care teleassistance. Outside France - Elder remains a protective vest with Chutex app notifications; local emergency and telecare services remain separate.

Telecare button vs airbag vest

An alert after the fall does not prevent fractures. Elder combines physical protection and notification.

SOS buttons and watches call for help but do not cushion skull or pelvis impacts.

Elder is CE category II PPE (cert. 1135260401/OE - RICOTEST notified body 0498), not a lifestyle gadget.

$879 in the United States (no VAT, free shipping from France; import duties, if any, on delivery). Sizes L, XL and XXL ship from November 8, 2026, with no guaranteed delivery date. Medicare/PERS pairing varies: use 911 and local alert services. Chutex Care is available in France only; medical teleconsultations and home-care partner interventions are currently available in France.

FAQ

Does an airbag vest for the elderly prevent falls?

No. An airbag vest does not stop a fall from happening. Elder is designed to cushion the impact on the head, back, pelvis and hips once a fall is detected, without any guarantee against injury. Preventing falls relies on other steps: strength and balance exercise, a medicines review, eye exams and a safer home (CDC).

Is there an airbag vest for elderly people?

Yes. Elder is an airbag vest for seniors and adults at risk of falling. Its sensors detect a fall in progress and the airbag inflates around the hips, back and head to cushion the impact. It is worn over clothing and reusable after replacing the helium cartridges.

Airbag vest, fall vest or airbag jacket for elderly people: is it the same thing?

Yes, these names describe the same category: a wearable garment with motion sensors and gas cartridges that inflates when a fall is detected. Elder is worn as a vest over clothing, weighs about 2.6 lb (1.2 kg), protects hips, lower back and head, and is reusable after a cartridge change.

How much does an airbag vest for the elderly cost?

Elder costs $879 in the United States, with no VAT (export from France) and free shipping to the United States. Import duties, if any, are assessed by US Customs and payable on delivery. Replacement helium cartridges are consumables sold separately.

How does an inflatable fall vest work?

Motion sensors analyse posture and acceleration in real time. When the pattern of a fall is confirmed, helium cartridges inflate the airbag to cushion the impact on the hips, back and head; the manufacturer's figure for the inflation is about 0.08 s once the fall is detected. After a deployment the vest is reset with new cartridges in about 30 seconds.

Is an airbag vest a medical device?

No. Elder is personal protective equipment (PPE, CE category II, EU type-examination certificate no. 1135260401/OE), not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or monitor any condition, and it is not cleared or evaluated by the FDA. Talk to a healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition.

Is the Elder airbag vest FDA-approved?

No. Elder is personal protective equipment (CE category II PPE), not a medical device. It has not been cleared or evaluated by the FDA and does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. Ask a healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition.

Does Medicare or insurance cover the Elder airbag vest?

Elder is not durable medical equipment and Chutex makes no reimbursement claim. Coverage or HSA/FSA eligibility, if any, depends on your plan: check with your plan administrator before ordering.

Does Elder work with a medical alert (PERS) system?

Elder and a medical alert button are complementary. The button calls for help after a fall; Elder cushions the fall itself and can notify your configured caregivers through the Chutex app after a deployment. In an emergency in the US, call 911. Chutex Care is available in France only; medical teleconsultations and home-care partner interventions are currently available in France.

Elder is category II PPE. It does not replace medical advice or appropriate human supervision. Consult a healthcare professional if you have a medical condition.

Falls in the United States: why impact protection matters

More than 14 million adults aged 65 and older, one in four, report falling each year in the United States, and falls are the leading cause of injury and injury-related death in this age group. Each year, older adult falls lead to about 4.5 million emergency department visits, including about 1.4 million hospitalizations, and nearly 319,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures; 83% of hip fracture deaths and 88% of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for hip fractures were attributed to falls. The age-adjusted fall death rate for adults 65 and older rose 21%, from 64.7 to 78.4 per 100,000, between 2018 and 2024. Falling once doubles the chance of falling again, and fewer than half of older adults tell their doctor.

Prevention comes first: strength and balance exercise, a review of medicines with a doctor or pharmacist, regular eye exams and fewer tripping hazards at home, as the CDC recommends. Elder is meant for the falls that still happen: its airbag inflates in about 0.08 s once the fall is detected (manufacturer's figure), around the hips, lower back and head. It weighs about 2.6 lb (1.2 kg), is worn over clothing and is reusable after a 30-second cartridge change.
