Calculating your running pace: time, distance, speed
Coach review in progress.
Pace in seconds per kilometre is time in seconds divided by distance in kilometres. Speed in km/h is distance divided by time in hours. The distances used for the half marathon and the marathon are 21.0975 km and 42.195 km.
The calculation runs in your browser. No data is sent or stored.
Example: 10 km in 50 min 00, i.e. 3 000 seconds. Pace = 3 000 / 10 = 300 seconds per kilometre, i.e. 5 min 00. Speed = 12 km/h.
Calculate
Three directions: distance and time give pace and speed; distance and pace give time; time and pace give distance. Seconds are rounded to the nearest whole number for a displayed time. Distance is rounded to the hundredth of a kilometre.
Pace table
At 5 min 00 per kilometre (300 seconds): 5 km in 25 min 00, 10 km in 50 min 00, 21.0975 km in 1 h 45 min 29 s (6 329 seconds), 42.195 km in 3 h 30 min 59 s (12 659 seconds).
At 6 min 00 per kilometre (360 seconds): 5 km in 30 min 00, 10 km in 60 min 00, 21.0975 km in 2 h 06 min 35 s (7 595 seconds).
| Pace | 5 km | 10 km | 21.0975 km | 42.195 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 min 00 | 1500 s | 3000 s | 6329 s | 12659 s |
| 6 min 00 | 1800 s | 3600 s | 7595 s | 15190 s |
Training pace
No beginner's pace is set here: it depends on the terrain, the heat and the person. A pace at which you can still talk is a marker for an easy session, not a medical norm. For a race target, the table above converts a pace into a time, without saying it is the right one.
The result is a clock calculation. It does not say which pace suits you.
Frequently asked questions
What pace for a beginner?
This calculator gives no standard pace. It converts a time, a distance and a pace. Choosing a pace at which conversation remains possible is a common marker for an easy session, not a threshold published on this page.
How do you convert min/km to km/h?
Speed (km/h) = 3 600 / pace in seconds per kilometre. A pace of 300 seconds (5 min 00) gives 3 600 / 300 = 12 km/h.
