Fall detection watch vs airbag vest: what each one does

A fall detection watch senses a fall and sends an alert; it is not designed to protect your body from the impact. An airbag vest such as Elder inflates once a fall is detected to cushion the impact; it does not prevent the fall and does not call emergency services. They do different jobs, so the useful question is which job you need done.

What a fall detection watch does

A fall detection watch is worn on the wrist and uses its motion sensors to recognize a sudden fall. When it detects one, it sends an alert, for example to a contact you chose or to an emergency service, depending on the model and its settings.

That alert can shorten the time before someone knows you fell. It does not change what happens to your body during the fall itself: a watch is not designed to cushion an impact.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) describes emergency response systems that let you push a button on a necklace or bracelet to call for help, and notes that some smartwatches also have this feature. Whether help arrives still depends on the contacts and services you set up in advance.

If you are hurt or are unable to get up on your own after a fall, the NIA advises asking someone for help or calling 911.

What an airbag vest does

Elder is the wearable airbag vest sold by Chutex. Its sensors detect a fall, and the airbag then inflates. The manufacturer states that the airbag inflates in about 0.08 seconds once a fall is detected. That figure describes inflation after detection, not the time needed to detect the fall.

The airbag is designed to cushion the head, neck, back, pelvis, hips and femoral neck. It aims to cushion the impact, with no guarantee of avoiding an injury.

Elder does not prevent the fall, does not stop a seizure, does not call 911 or any other emergency service, and does not replace a medical alert service. The Chutex app can notify the caregivers you have set up; that notification is not a call for help.

After an inflation, the helium cartridges are replaced and the vest can be used again.

Watch or vest: which job do you need done?

If your main worry is that nobody would know about a fall, the question is how an alert would reach someone: a watch, a pendant or a monitoring service. Check who receives the alert and what happens if nobody answers.

If your main worry is the impact itself, for example on the hip, a vest or hip protectors act on the body during the fall. They do not alert anyone on their own, and Elder's app notification to caregivers is not an emergency call.

Some families want both. The two do different jobs, and neither removes the need to call 911 when someone is badly hurt.

Whatever you choose, it only helps if it is worn. Ask the person who would wear it, and try it on before you buy.

Airbag fall arrest systems and human airbag systems: what the terms mean

People who search for an airbag fall arrest system or a human airbag system are usually looking for a wearable airbag, a garment with an airbag that inflates when a fall is detected. Wearable airbags exist for different activities, and this page is about Elder, which is made for older adults.

In personal protective equipment, fall arrest normally refers to a harness and lanyard attached to an anchor point, which stops a person from falling from a height. Elder has no anchor and does not stop a fall. It cushions the impact once a fall is detected.

Elder is personal protective equipment, category II, with an EU CE marking (EU type-examination certificate no. 1135260401/OE issued by Ricotest, notified body 0498). It is not a medical device and has not been cleared or evaluated by the FDA.

Questions to ask before you buy

For a watch: Does it detect falls automatically, or only when you press a button? Who receives the alert, and what happens if nobody answers? Does it need a phone nearby or a subscription to send alerts? How often does it need charging?

For an airbag vest: What exactly triggers inflation? Which body zones are covered? Is the product certified as personal protective equipment, and can you read the certificate? How are the cartridges replaced, and what do replacements cost? Can the person wear it comfortably, and for how long each day?

For both: What does the maker say the product does not do? Is each claim attributed to the maker or to an independent test? What is the return or trial policy?

What the CDC and the NIA say about falls

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that falls among adults 65 and older caused over 43,000 deaths in 2024, and that emergency departments recorded about 4.5 million visits for older adult falls that year. The CDC also states that falls can be prevented.

The NIA says that more than one in four people aged 65 or older fall each year, and that many falls can be prevented. It lists exercising, managing medications, having your vision checked and making your home safer as steps people can take.

Those steps are separate from any device: a watch or a vest does not replace them. The NIA also advises telling your doctor about any fall since your last check-up, even if you felt no pain.

When to talk to a doctor or call 911 after a fall

The NIA advises asking someone for help or calling 911 if you are hurt or are unable to get up on your own after a fall. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911: neither a watch nor a vest replaces that call.

The NIA also advises telling your doctor about any fall since your last check-up, even if you felt no pain, because a fall can point to a new medical problem or to an issue with medications or eyesight that can be corrected. A clinician can also tell you whether a device suits you if you have epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, a fracture risk or another neurological condition.
