Key facts
- Muscle strengthening can be done at home or in a gym, using body weight, bands or weights. 1
- You do not need weights or a gym membership to work on your strength. 2
- Strengthening can use bodyweight, free weights, resistance machines or elastic bands. 3
- Adults should do strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week; any is better than none. 3
- Model I needs about 2 m² of clear training space and a load-bearing wall. 6
What do you really need?
Start from the guideline, not the catalogue. For adults aged 19 to 64 the NHS says to do strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week, and the UK Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) add that any strengthening activity is better than none.13
The CMOs say strengthening can use bodyweight, free weights, resistance machines or elastic bands, and everyday tasks such as stair climbing.3 The NHS list of examples includes push-ups, sit-ups, resistance bands and lifting weights.1 Its own home strength exercises describe moves as gentle and easy to follow, for people who have not done much for a while.4
So the true minimum is a stable chair, a wall and some floor space. Arthritis UK says you do not need weights or a gym membership, and gives yoga, gardening and carrying shopping as strength work.2 Kit earns its place only when you want to add load in small steps. For the first weeks, see how to start strength training.
One rule applies to everything you buy. Arthritis UK lists safe equipment, the right clothing and footwear, a proper warm-up and cool-down and the right technique among the ways to avoid exercise injuries.2 The NHS says to warm up properly before exercising.5
Space first: flats, garages and spare rooms
No source read for this guide gives a standard size for a UK spare room, garage or flat, so we do not pretend to. What the maker pages do give is the footprint of each kit, and that is the number to hold against a tape measure.
| Kit | Space or size given | Source |
|---|---|---|
| No kit: body-weight and chair moves | Floor space to step back or lie down; no size given in the sources read. | NHS.4 |
| REP Fitness QuickDraw adjustable dumbbells | Take up a very small footprint compared with a 2.5 to 30 kg dumbbell set, says the page. | REP Fitness UK.7 |
| Model I wall-mounted cable machine | About 2 m² of clear training space, which is 2 × 10.764 = 21.5 sq ft. | Chutex.6 |
| Speediance Gym Monster 3 | 0.26 m² folded and 0.84 m² unfolded (about 9.0 sq ft); 122 × 69 × 185 cm unfolded. | Speediance UK storefront.14 |
| REP Fitness Ares 2.0 wall-mounted | Depth 29 in (73.7 cm) to the lower pulley bracket, 33 in (83.8 cm) to the trolley; height 80 in (203.2 cm). | REP Fitness UK.12 |
Sizes are as stated by makers. Conversions to sq ft and cm are our arithmetic. The Speediance storefront is operated by FUTURE MVMT LIMITED.
Two points follow. A folding or wall-mounted item can leave the floor free when you are not training. And a cable machine on a wall also needs clear floor in front of it, which is what the 2 m² figure describes.
For rooms that you share, plan the storage as well. The Model I page notes that free weights need storage and spotting for heavy lifts.6
Starter kit: bands and adjustable dumbbells
Bands and dumbbells are the usual first purchases. REP Fitness UK lists resistance bands from £14.99 (3X-Light) to £24.99 (Medium) per band.9 Its QuickDraw adjustable dumbbells are shown in pairs of 15 kg at £309.98, 20 kg at £379.96, 25 kg at £449.95 and 30 kg at £519.92.7
These are prices as shown on the maker's page on 2026-10-16, and the REP cart text reads “Tax included. Free Shipping.” The rows are not a ranking and not an endorsement.
As arithmetic, one 3X-Light band plus the 15 kg pair is £14.99 + £309.98 = £324.97. The REP page says the dumbbell weight changes from 2.5 kg to 30 kg in seconds on the largest option.7
A mat helps with floor and vibration. The only floor advice read for this guide is the Model I page advice to use a mat under the training zone to reduce vibration.6 No source we read sets a floor thickness.
Next level: bench, packages and rack
Once you add a bench you can press and row from a seat. REP Fitness UK shows its AB-5200 2.0 adjustable bench at £549.99.8 The starter kit above plus the bench is £14.99 + £309.98 + £549.99 = £874.96.
REP also sells bundles. Its Small Gym Home Package, which it describes as a premium adjustable bench, adjustable dumbbells, storage and accessories, is £1,049.95.10 Its Home Gym Garage Package is £2,294.87.11 The package contents differ from the three items above, so this is not a like-for-like saving: £1,049.95 − £874.96 = £174.99 more for the package, which includes storage and accessories.
Kettlebells and racks are common next steps, but we did not read maker pages for them, so we give no figures.
Cable machines: what they add
A cable machine lets one piece of kit cover pulls, presses and curls with a smooth, guided path. The Model I page says the cable provides constant tension with guided paths.6 Resistance machines are one of the ways the CMOs list for strengthening.3
The prices below are for cable and digital machines on UK maker or storefront pages on 2026-10-16. REP builder prices are for the base configuration shown and change with options.
| Machine | Type | Price shown | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| REP Fitness Athena wall-mounted | Weight stack, 2:1 pulley | £1,549.86 (builder price; shown as sold out on 2026-10-16) | Stack of 170 lb per side; minimum 10 lb per side.13 |
| REP Fitness Ares 2.0 wall-mounted | Weight stack, 2:1 pulley | £4,334.91 (base builder price) | Options change the price.12 |
| Speediance Gym Nano, fixed mount | Digital resistance | £1,699.00 (slide mount £1,799.00); pre-order, dispatch from 14 December 2026 | 3.5 to 100 kg in steps of 0.45 kg; noise 60 dB or below.15 |
| Speediance Gym Monster 3 Core | Digital resistance, folds | £3,249.00; the cart text says tax is included | 100 kg (220 lb) in 1 kg steps.14 |
| Chutex Model I | Motorised, wall-mounted | See the product panel on this page | 2 to 50 kg in steps of 1 kg; needs a load-bearing wall.6 |
Price as shown on the maker's page, except Speediance, which shows “Tax included” in its cart text. The REP cart text reads “Tax included. Free Shipping.” The Speediance storefront is operated by FUTURE MVMT LIMITED.
The 2:1 pulley ratio on the REP pages means the weight feels half as heavy as the stack: the REP page says 20 lb feels like 10 lb.13 For the full detail, read the home gym cable machine guide.
Floors, noise and neighbours
Noise figures are stated by the makers and have not been measured by anyone else. Chutex says the Model I motor is typically under 40 dB at normal loads, and the page advises avoiding silent hours in sensitive buildings and using a mat under the training zone to reduce vibration.6 Speediance gives the Gym Nano a noise level of 60 dB or below.15
That is all the sources read for this guide say on the subject. None gives a rule on floor strength, ceiling height or neighbour noise in UK homes. If you live in a flat or share a wall, talk to the neighbours or building manager before you start.
Renters should ask first. Chutex says renters can install Model I with landlord approval and that patching holes on move-out depends on the lease. In apartments, building managers should approve wall fixings where required.6
A checklist before you buy
- Check the guideline first. At least 2 days a week of strengthening, any kit or none.13
- Measure the space and compare it with the maker footprint in the table above.
- For anything wall-mounted, check the wall. The Model I page says the wall must be load-bearing, that you use the included template, and that you should hire a qualified installer if you are unsure of the wall type.6
- Rented home or flat: get your landlord or building manager to approve fixings in writing.6
- Check noise and vibration. Put a mat under the training zone.6
- Check what the price includes. Check the cart text on each page: REP reads “Tax included. Free Shipping.” and Speediance reads “Tax included”.
- Home cover: no source read covers this, so ask your provider.
A word on whether it is worth it. A comparison with a gym membership would need a membership price, and we did not read one, so we do not give a figure. Use your own local quote.
Safety and storage
Warm up before every session. The NHS routine takes at least 6 minutes.5 Arthritis UK says exercise injuries can be avoided by warming up and cooling down properly, using safe equipment, wearing the right clothing and footwear and using the right technique.2
Store loose weights somewhere they cannot roll or fall. The Model I page says free weights need storage and spotting for heavy lifts.6 Related reading: strength training at home, sets and reps and progressive overload.
Frequently asked questions
What equipment do I need for a home gym?
Less than you may think. The NHS counts bodyweight moves, resistance bands and weights as strengthening, and Arthritis UK says you do not need weights or a gym membership. Add kit as the basics get easy.
What is the best home gym for a small space?
That depends on your room. Adjustable dumbbells take up a very small footprint according to REP Fitness, and wall-mounted or folding machines leave floor free. Compare the maker footprints in the table and measure your space.
Do I need a bench?
Not for the NHS moves, which use a chair, a wall and light weights. A bench opens up seated presses and rows. REP Fitness UK shows an adjustable bench at £549.99, as shown on its page on 2026-10-16.
What flooring do I need?
The only floor advice read for this guide is the Model I page advice to use a mat under the training zone to reduce vibration. No source we read gives a thickness.
Can I use a home gym in a flat?
It is possible, but noise and vibration matter. Chutex says the Model I motor is typically under 40 dB and advises avoiding silent hours in sensitive buildings. Ask your landlord or building manager before fixing anything to a wall.
What does a starter kit cost?
From REP Fitness UK prices shown on 2026-10-16, one 3X-Light band (£14.99) plus a 15 kg adjustable dumbbell pair (£309.98) is £324.97. The REP cart text reads “Tax included. Free Shipping.”
